Cholesterol Education Month: What You Need to Know About Heart Health
It’s National Cholesterol Education Month, which makes it a great time to learn how cholesterol affects your health. High cholesterol often has no symptoms but can raise your risk of heart disease and stroke.
What Is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in your blood. In addition, your body needs it to build cells and make certain hormones. However, too much cholesterol can build up in your arteries, causing blockages that lead to serious health problems.
Types of Cholesterol
- LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein): “Bad” Cholesterol
– High levels can cause fatty deposits in arteries.
- HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): “Good” Cholesterol
– Helps remove LDL from your bloodstream.
- Triglycerides
– Another type of fat that, when elevated, increases heart disease risk.
Who Should Get Tested?
Adults aged 20 and older should have their cholesterol checked at least every 4–6 years, or more often if they have risk factors. For example:
- Family history of heart disease
- High blood pressure or diabetes
- Smoking or obesity
- Poor diet or sedentary lifestyle
- How to Manage Your Cholesterol
Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet
Choose whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats like olive oil and nuts. Limit processed foods, fried foods, and added sugars.
Exercise Regularly
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week (like brisk walking or cycling).
Quit Smoking & Limit Alcohol
Both can worsen cholesterol levels and harm heart health.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Even a modest weight loss can improve cholesterol numbers.
Take Medications if Prescribed
Sometimes lifestyle changes aren’t enough. Statins and other medications may be necessary, and your provider will guide you.
